In the year 1924, the Honorable Dorothy Brett arrived in Taos, New Mexico. This trip to the American Southwest became the adventure that would go on to define her personal life and artistic career.
Brett was born into an aristocratic British family with strict social expectations. However, her time spent studying at the Slade School of Art, and the artists she met there, encouraged her to see more of the world. Through an invitation from English novelist D. H. Lawrence, Brett discovered her home in Taos. From her arrival in 1924 to her passing in 1977, Brett became a fixture in the Taos artistic community. Her presence is felt today through her paintings, which continue to express her passion for the land, people, and culture of the Southwest.
“Painting from Within” features works from private collections in Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. These paintings have adorned the homes of their owners and maintain a constant presence of Brett in the lives of those who enjoy them. In many cases, this is the first time these works have been shared with the public in decades.
