TWO STRAND TAB NECKLACE
Zuni
c. 1935
Length 30" (76.22 cm)
Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos

A spectacular double strand of large gem-quality sky-blue Cerrillos turquoise nuggets, this necklace weighs nearly four pounds. It was made about 1945 by Leekya Deyuse who "carved each stone to mother nature's dictate." Millicent Rogers traveled and collected many pieces of jewelry from the Navajo Reservation, from native art and craft fairs, from the pueblos of the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. This necklace was purchased on a trip to the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial in 1947 by Millicent Rogers and her good friend John Joseph, a founding Trustee of the Museum. Its worth today is unknown and it is not for sale. This very famous necklace was not "old pawn" but was first made for commercial sale.
