Position Opening: Executive Director
The Millicent Rogers Museum, located in Taos, New Mexico, opened in 1956, founded by Millicent Rogers, son, Paul Peralta-Ramos, and other members of the Rogers family in an effort to preserve it’s namesakes’ remarkable collection of Native American jewelry, textiles, and pottery. The museum’s collections and facility have continued to expand and it is internationally regarded as one of the southwestern United States’ premier collections of Native American, Southwestern, and Spanish Colonial art and design.
Taos and the region of northern New Mexico in which The Millicent Rogers Museum is located (reflecting the focus of it’s collection) is a culturally diverse landscape that is rich with history. Once an important trading hub and home to the first territorial governor, today it is a year around world-class tourist destination with vibrant arts communities, fine dining, and numerous recreational and cultural opportunities for visitors.
The museum is a private, nonprofit, educational institution, supported by its membership program and sponsors, and is accredited by the prestigious American Association of Museums. The Millicent Rogers Museum Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the museum and is its primary representative to the public and art and business communities of the region.
Millicent Rogers Museum Mission Statement
The Millicent Rogers Museum acquires, preserves, conducts research on, displays and interprets its collections to help educate the public about the art, history and culture of Native American, Hispanic and Euro-American peoples of the Southwest, emphasizing northern New Mexico and Taos.
Overall Responsibilities
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Trustees and is accountable to its leadership. The Executive Director has primary responsibility and authority for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission in fund raising, program development, administration, budget planning, management, personnel, and public relations. He or she will
· Ensure that the Millicent Rogers Museum has a long-range strategy in the areas of fund raising, programs, and collections and that the strategy will be implemented so as to achieve the Museum’s mission with consistent and timely progress.
· Provide leadership in developing new programs, exhibits, shows, and events.
· Review organizational and financial plans with the Board of Trustees regularly, carrying out plans and policies authorized by the Board of Trustees.
· Have knowledge of and experience with AAM standards, resources, and accreditation procedures.
· Provide creativity in planning, organizing, and displaying various special events and exhibits, consistent with the Millicent Rogers Museum's mission to increase attendance and build financial security.
· Provide oversight of professional museum methods, including exhibit installation, collections, operations, educational programming, and touring.
· Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the Millicent Rogers Museum's work.
· Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
· Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of Native American, Hispanic, and Southwestern Art.
Governance and Financial Management
· Provide leadership and support to best utilize the talents and resources of the Board of Trustees, stimulate involvement, assist in the recruitment of new members, and work closely with the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee of the board to ensure strong fiscal health of the organization.
· With Trustee input, establish and maintain all fiscal policies and procedures necessary to maintain financial control and effectiveness of the Museum.
· Maintain fiscal responsibility for overall budget and ensure the most effective use of financial resources.
· Initiate and maintain effective communications with the Board President, Board of Trustees, Board Advisors, management team, all staff, and volunteers.
· Assist in Trustee prospect identification, cultivation, and recruitment.
· Orient, educate, and engage Board and staff members to maximize their effectiveness.
· Acknowledge the Board and individual Board members, recognizing their contributions of time and resources as ambassadors for the Museum.
· Be actively responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
· Ensure that up-to-date staff job descriptions are developed and maintained, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
· With the Board, ensure that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place. Ensure that the Museum’s mission and strategic direction are understood by all employees and that their individual tactical contributions to the mission of the museum are clearly outlined.
· Mentor and encourage staff and volunteer development and education and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
· Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
Fund Raising
· Demonstrate success in fund raising, including identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
· Create and implement a comprehensive fund raising plan (with realistic goals and timeline) that includes special events, direct mail, annual and membership campaigns, major and planned gifts, grant requests, donor stewardship and recognition, and comprehensive and capital campaigns.
· Understand and oversee the Museum Store.
· Have knowledge and experience in implementing a capital or comprehensive campaign.
· Provide leadership of and assist the Board in managing and increasing the resources of the Endowment.
· Use social media and it’s applications for advertising and promotion as appropriate.
Communications
· Ensure that the Board of Trustees is kept regularly and fully informed about the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
· Publicize and promote all activities and events at the Millicent Rogers Museum, including its programs and it’s stated goals, to the general public and all relevant agencies and organizations,
· Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with other museums in the State and in the southwest region that have a similar missions, as well as other community groups and organizations whose missions are consistent with that of the Millicent Rogers Museum.
The ideal candidate will have
· A bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree preferred.
· Proven fund raising ability, (including annual giving, special events, major and planned giving, campaign, leadership development, and endowment growth and management),
· Experience in non-profit administration.
· An interest in and commitment to promoting the arts and culture of the southwest, especially in context of the Millicent Rogers Museum.
· Five or more years in a senior museum, non-profit, or for-profit business position.
· Experience in effective grant proposal writing.
· Demonstrated success in management, planning, organization, administration, and educational programming.
· Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
· Experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with other organizations.
· Demonstrated ability to provide creative leadership, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and work strategically.
· A firm understanding of business financial principles and budgeting in order to manage and increase current and new revenue streams.
· Competence in the management and use of computer applications for word processing, internet, electronic mail, and social media.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, with appropriate benefits including health and dental insurance, vacation, and participation in 403b pension plan. Employer will assist with relocation costs.
